Pincushion Mountain Trail

“I have recurring dreams where I’m on a plane or train and all the people around me, Native and non-Native, are speaking different Indigenous languages . . .”

… I hear Lashootseed, Tlingit, Catawba… and they’re feeding their babies wild rice and smoked fish. I’m dreaming about a modern world that doesn’t erase its Indigenous intelligence but rather embraces the rich complexity of Indigenous cultures. In this world, Indigenous value systems are known and affect the way we all live. Indigenous language immersion schools are common. Native children believe in their future. Native women are safe. Our Two Spirit relatives are valued. Our Mother Earth has rights that are protected and respected. I believe that these dreams can be actualized if we all bring our hearts and minds together. The extraordinary land we walk on is Native land, whether it be city streets, suburban cul-de-sacs, deserts, plains, mountains, or shorelines. Indigenous existence is all around us. It is up to us to listen.”

~Matika Wilbur, from the introduction to her book Project 562: Changing the Way We See Native America
